Strauss Zelnick believes consumers vote for the best titles.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick shared his thoughts on Microsoft's decision to acquire Activision, saying it would be good for the industry.
“We’re certainly of the belief that it’s a good thing for Microsoft and the industry,” he said. “It’s a highly fragmented business and there’s plenty of room for creativity to go around, and Microsoft is an ally of ours, and if this makes their business more powerful we think that’s good for us.”
Zelnick isn't concerned about Microsoft’s attention focusing on Activision games and says that in the end, players decide what to play, "and if we create great hits, which is our business, the consumers will show up, and no one can take that away from us, no one can replicate that."
“So I think we’re all essentially pulling in the same direction. The entertainment business is the antithesis of a fungible commoditized business – every title stands alone, so it sort of doesn’t compete with anything else, and yet it’s highly competitive in a way.
The CEO concludes that the companies compete with everything and nothing at the same time as you can't replace one title with another.
Microsoft's acquisition of Activision has been investigated for quite some time now, with the US Federal Trade Commission checking the deal soon after it was announced. The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is still looking into it, a decision supported by Sony. Indie studios are worried that small games will face difficulties gaining audiences.
