Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick Talks Subscription Services

The head of the company believes adding major titles to subscription services on the day of their release doesn't make economical sense.

In a recent video interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick shared that the company believes there is no sense in making its major titles available for subscription services on the day of their release.

He noted that Take-Two has generally been supporting subscription services and it "is happy to do so", however, he emphasized that what the company is skeptical about is "making frontline console products available day and date with subscription."

Zelnick went on to say that adding the titles to subscription services on day one doesn't make sense to the company.

"Economically speaking, we don’t think consumers are prepared to pay for that – why would they? – and we can’t afford to turn our business upside down in a way that doesn’t make sense economically," he added, "There always has to be an intersection between what the consumer wants and what the publisher is able to do, and it doesn’t make sense to do that for frontline properties in our opinion."

The Outer Worlds

Zelnick believes Sony is of the same opinion as Take-Two. Previously, the Japanese company also expressed its opinion on the matter with PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan noting that the release of games for PS5 by subscription will negatively affect their quality.

According to the head of Take-Two, the subscription model is best suited for games that have been on the market for some time. "If their price has been reduced it can make economic sense to offer those on a subscription basis,” he said.

Zelnick stressed that this may not always be the company's case, although he said that it could change in the future depending on how the subscription landscape will evolve.

"This company does not operate based on one person’s opinions, including mine, and when it makes sense we’ll support subscription services, and if that’s where the consumer wants to be, that’s where we’ll be," he clarified.
