Terrain3D: A Free Terrain System for Godot Engine

The plug-in has been written in C++ and is currently in alpha.

In case you missed it, Game Developers Cory Petkovsek from Tokisan Games and Roope Palmroos from Outobugi Games have recently shipped Terrain3D, a free and customizable terrain system for Godot Engine 4.0+.

Initially developed for Out of the Ashes, the team's upcoming medieval-themed 3D action-adventure game, Terrain3D has been written in C++ and is available as a Godot GDExtension plug-in, which works with official engine builds. According to the developers, while the plug-in is still at its alpha stage of development, it has proven to be stable and can already be used to set up landscapes for your open-world games and 3D environments.

Features:

  • Geometric Clipmap mesh terrain (code created by Mike J Savage).
  • Up to 16k x 16k, sliced up in non-contiguous 1k regions.
  • Up to 10 levels of detail (LODs)
  • Up to 32 textures
  • Sculpting, texture painting, texture detiling, paint colors or wetness
  • Supports importing heightmaps from HTerrain, WorldMachine, Unity, Unreal, and any tool that can export a Height Map (raw/r16/exr/+)
