The 10th Best-Selling Game of All Time is… Diablo 3?

Even after a poor launch that revealed how unfinished the game was, Blizzard’s Diablo 3 is now the 10th best-selling video game of all time. After multiple patches, the title was completely transformed and now it beats out other huge AAA titles in this surprising turn of events.

Even after a poor launch that revealed how unfinished the game was, Blizzard’s Diablo 3 is now the 10th best-selling video game of all time. After multiple patches, the title was completely transformed and now it beats out other huge AAA titles in this surprising turn of events.

Activision’s quarterly report came out two days ago there were some interesting headlines that stood out. It turns out the hugely popular MMORPG World of Warcraft has lost about 44% of its subscribers in the past six months. This doesn’t seem to be too big of a deal because Blizzard and Activision has Hearthstone and Destiny to make up for it.

The interesting thing though, is the fact that Diablo 3 has passed the 30 million mark in sales. According to Wikipedia’s ‘List of Best-Selling Video Games‘ the action RPG made it to 10th place, beating out the Call of Duty games, every Grand Theft Auto besides Grand Theft Auto V, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Here is the top 10 titles on the list and the units each title sold in millions:

  1. Tetris (2006) – 100 M
  2. Wii Sports (2006) – 82.69 M
  3. Minecraft (2009) – 70 M
  4. Grand Theft Auto V (2013) – 52 M
  5. Super Mario Bros. (1985) – 40.2 M
  6. Mario Kart Wii (2008) – 36.4 M
  7. Tetris (1989) – 35 M
  8. Wii Sports Resort (2009) – 32.8 M
  9. New Super Mario Bros. (2006) – 30.7 M
  10. Diablo 3 (2012) – 30 M

Now, of course people are going to question the credibility of the list. Although it is always being updated, there are going to be certain things that are out of date, and in terms of sales across platforms, it’s quite hard to get a completely accurate count of how many were sold. The sales include sales of the standalone expansion Reaper of Souls.

The numbers get a little tricky when you put into consideration that Wii Sports was included with pretty much every Wii sold and the prices of each game varied. So if people have an issue with Reaper of Souls being included into the count for Diablo 3, it’s probably best to not take it so seriously.
