The game designer emphasizes that he doesn’t "really want to be in the business of selling NFTs" noting that he's only interested in blockchain because of its ability to allow for secure transactions between players.
Game designer Will Wright, best known for his work on SimCity and The Sims, has revealed that he is currently working on a new project, a blockchain game called VOXverse.
According to the game designer, the game that is currently in development at Gallium Studios, a studio co-founded by Wright and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? co-creator Lauren Elliott, is set to be a virtual world set on a giant cube where players will be able to mine resources, own land, create attractions, and socialize.
In an introductory video for VOXverse, Wright also noted that the game will have its own economy, with players being able to have jobs or run businesses employing other players. He also added that while players are not in the game, their characters will be acting as NPCs so they can still be working at a job and earning money while a player is offline.
It is said that VOXverse players won't need to purchase NFTs to take part in the game but the game will support VOX characters, which are NFTs created by crypto gaming company Gala Games.
Despite the usage of NFTs in the game, however, Wright emphasized that he doesn’t "really want to be in the business of selling NFTs." In an interview with Axios, the game designer pointed out that his interest in blockchain mostly derives from the technology's ability to allow for secure transactions between players.
Wright also noted that he is "much more interested in attracting a million free-to-play players" than "10,000 rich whales" (players who spend substantial amounts of money on a game) adding that the developers "could use those rich whales" though.
The game designer explained that it is planned that the game will attract three types of players: a small number of rich virtual landowners who purchase plots with crypto, a middle group of players commissioned by the landowners to create items who will have a share of the sale proceeds from their creations, and "a mass" of free-to-play players who will just hang out and have fun in the virtual world.
