Unity Is Bringing Better Lighting, Trees & VFX in Future Releases

SpeedTree and Ziva Dynamics will help it.

During a GDC talk last week, Unity unveiled its roadmap for 2023, revealing the improvements that will get users excited.

As reported by VG247, the upcoming 23.1 LTS update will bring line ray tracing and screen space lens flares to the engine. Future releases will also introduce a six-way lighting system, making visual effects like smoke, fog, and explosions look more realistic.

The company is also developing a new randergraphic system, which should improve the performance of Unity games, but it's still being tested.

You should also expect adaptive probe volumes to automatically place light sources into scenes and improved water simulation. Unity will also use SpeedTree's tech to make vegetation look better, and Ziva Dynamics will provide more realistic facial animations.
