Upcoming Mapmaking Tool for Creating Hand-Drawn Maps

The tool was developed by Might of Merchants' creator Hannes Breuer.

Hannes Breuer, a Game Developer and the creator of the medieval trading simulator Might of Merchants, has announced Canvas of Kings, an upcoming Godot-powered mapmaking tool for creating minimalistic hand-drawn-style maps.

With this tool, users can define their maps using paths and plots that can be adjusted at any time. The automatic object placement feature provides support, making it easy to add walls with towers or create entire forests with a few simple steps.

Rather than placing and adjusting individual objects manually, Canvas of Kings allows users to randomly vary object properties directly and use object categories to effortlessly craft a diverse map. Objects can also be combined, such as placing crates on towers or walls and moving them together. Additionally, the tool comes with a built-in lighting and weather system, enabling users to change the atmosphere of their map according to their preferences.

The tool allows you to:

  • Create fully procedurally generated maps
  • Paint the landscape in the classic way
  • Create interior views of buildings or caves
  • Insert texts or decorative elements
  • Import custom assets
  • Export to VTT format (except: png/jpg, with/without grid. Map is saved as .json)
  • Create animations

Canvas of Kings is set to be released on August 3, 2023. You can learn more and wishlist the tool by clicking this link.

It is also worth noting that the tool was initially developed for Might of Merchants, a WiP economic and trading simulator with role-playing elements, set in a medieval kingdom. In this game, you will be able to create your business, expand it, and make your own dynasty, all of that while enjoying the title's hand-drawing art style.
