World Video Game Hall of Fame Adds The Last of Us and Wii Sports to Its Ranks

This year's other inductees are Computer Space and Barbie Fashion Designer.

The World Video Game Hall of Fame at the Strong National Museum of Play just announced four new inductees. Barbie Fashion Designer, Computer Space, The Last of Us, and Wii Sports were recognized as classic games that have influenced pop culture and the gaming industry. Viewers can go see these games at the museum this summer, as it's been expanded to accommodate them.

The new World Video Game Hall of Fame inductees for 2023 won out over some tough competition this year. The list of finalists was packed with heavy hitters, including Age of Empires, Angry Birds, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, FIFA International Soccer, GoldenEye 007, NBA 2K, Quake, and Wizardry.

The Strong National Museum of Play released a statement explaining the significance of each game inducted into the Hall of Fame. According to the museum, Barbie Fashion Designer played an important role in proving that there was a market for games aimed at girls. This was a big deal, as back then, most games were created with boys in mind.

The Last of Us game from Naughty Dog was recognized for its impressive storytelling, exploration of human relationships, exciting gameplay, and memorable characters. The game's excellence in all of these areas was noted by the museum as the reason for its induction into the Hall of Fame.

Wii Sports was selected for its ability to attract millions of people worldwide who never thought they would enjoy playing video games. The museum acknowledged that Wii Sports gained widespread attention as news stories circulated about how it motivated people from diverse backgrounds to be active while playing virtual sports like bowling, tennis, and others.
Computer Space, inspired by the previously inducted Spacewar, was recognized for its groundbreaking status as the first commercial video game. Prior to its release in 1971, there was no real "video game industry" to speak of. As a result, Computer Space played a significant role in shaping the future of gaming as we know it today.

Barbie Fashion Designer, Computer Space, The Last of Us, and Wii Sports join the ranks of last year's inductees: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Ms. Pac-Man, Sid Meier’s Civilization, and Dance Dance Revolution. In total, the Hall of Fame now recognizes 40 games for their significant impact on the gaming industry and popular culture.
