A Modder Adds 4K Support to the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection in Just a Few Hours

Modder Serge has released a mod that improves the resolution of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, enhancing the visual experience by eliminating the subpar 720p rendering on higher-resolution monitors.

Modder Serge has achieved a remarkable feat by swiftly addressing the inadequate PC ports of Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection. Within a mere 10 hours of the games unlocking on Steam, Serge released a small 64.5-kilobyte tool that enables players to enjoy the titles at 4K or other resolutions. This mod effectively resolves the issue of the emulated HD remasters of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 rendering at a subpar 720p on higher resolution monitors, ensuring a much clearer and visually appealing experience.

According to Wes Fenlon from PC Gamer who has tested the mod on Metal Gear Solid 3, enabling the game to render at 4K resolution, the difference in image quality is remarkable. However, as Wes noted, there was a possibility that certain visual effects designed specifically for the PlayStation 2 hardware may be affected. Despite this, the initial gameplay experience appeared flawless.

It's worth noting that Metal Gear Solid 2 encounters some UI issues when changing resolutions, but it is anticipated that modders will promptly address this concern. To change the resolution in Metal Gear Solid 2 or 3, users can refer to the straightforward instructions provided on the GitHub page. The process involves downloading a D3D11 file and the resolution patch, which should be placed in the game's installation folder. Users can further customize the resolution by accessing the MGSResolutionPatch.ini file, with the default setting being 4K.
