A Retro Spiritual Successor To Zelda With Pixel Art From An Indie Dev

Sheep Lad is a game inspired by Zelda II that focuses on an engaging close-quarters combat system.

Have a look at a 2D pixel art action-platformer and RPG, with a focus on intense swordplay, exploration, and immersion. Titled Sheep Lad, the game is described as a spiritual successor to Zelda II which was released back in 1987.

Robin Poe, the developer of the title, shared that one of the main focuses is to create an engaging close-quarters combat system with "no fancy cartwheel triple jumps that send your character 10 feet in the air or flashy 5-button combos". Focusing on close intimate swordplay you will have to find gaps in your opponents' defenses before they find a gap in yours – just like old times, lads. The game's hero will maneuver around shields, parry and deflect attacks, and counter when there's an opening.

Compared to other action-platformers and Metroidvania games, the game is said to feature a rich RPG-like overworld with "caves, forests, mountains, towns, and dungeons with secrets, oddities, and danger everywhere you go."

"I'm very passionate about making a world feel like a living breathing space, where every NPC, home, and village feels like a small part of a larger living, breathing world. There are secrets hidden behind every corner, people with routines and relationships, places with cultural beliefs and histories," wrote the developer.
