Animating a Chaotic Taxi Ride Sequence in Blender With an Xbox Gamepad

Ian Hubert shared a behind-the-scenes look at the latest Dynamo Dream episode.

In case you missed the news, VFX Artist Ian Hubert delighted the 3D art community last week by unveiling "Prepare for Execution", a new episode of his sci-fi web series Dynamo Dream. Among the many stunning scenes present in the short film, a sequence that stood out in particular was the chaotic taxi ride through Old Town that the protagonist experiences. Responding to the community's positive feedback on this scene, Ian recently took to Twitter to share an under-the-hood look at the sequence and provide some details on how it was created.

As the artist explained, the taxi was animated in Blender using aka studios' RBC, a user-friendly, physics-based vehicle rigging plug-in that allows you to animate 3D models with an Xbox gamepad. According to Ian, the entire city environment where the action takes place was built around the path the car happened to take, removing the necessity to maneuver through the narrow streets of Old Town with a controller. He also mentioned that both Eevee and Cycles were utilized in production, with the former used for blocking in the timing/lighting and the latter for everything else.

Notably, this is not the first time the artist has provided a behind-the-scenes peek at "Prepare for Execution":
