Baldur's Gate 3 Boss Expected Alan Wake 2 to Become Game of the Year

Swen Vincke bet on Remedy's game or Tears of the Kingdom.

The Golden Joystick Awards is behind us, but the excitement is still fresh not only among players but also at Larian Studios, who took home a record number of awards, including Studio of the Year, Best Storytelling, and the Ultimate Game of the Year, for its hit RPG Baldur's Gate 3.

You might not be surprised by it, considering the game's success, but Larian's CEO Swen Vincke didn't expect to receive so many prizes. As reported by GamesRadar, Vincke said the team joked about walking home empty-handed, and while the CEO thought it was possible to win the PC Game of the Year, he didn't see the other six awards coming.

Especially thrilling was the Ultimate Game of the Year award as, in Vincke's opinion, there were other strong opponents present, like Alan Wake 2 and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

“Honestly I thought it was gonna be Alan Wake 2. I haven’t played it yet but I saw all the chatter about it. I saw people being ecstatic about it. So I figured it was gonna be Alan Wake 2, and if it wasn’t Alan Wake 2 I thought it was gonna be [The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom].”

Moreover, Vincke didn't think Baldur's Gate 3 with its "hardcore RPG mechanics" would make the cut when such games are not usually showered with awards, overshadowed with more cinematic titles.

Hopefully, Larian has more confidence now, and what it gets at The Game Awards on December 7 will not be such a surprise this time. Baldur's Gate 3 is nominated in 8 categories, including the Game of the Year one, and its chances are very high, I'd say.

"Seeing our little “niche RPG” make such waves is very motivating," Vincke commented under the nominees announcement. "I wish I could tell you about our next big game but this is really encouraging us to ensure it pushes many boundaries. I’m very excited about it."

We'd like to hear about Larian's "next big game" as well, but for now, we'll have to wait.
