Baldur's Gate 3 Lead on Why Few Studios Create Classic RPGs

Swen Vincke talked about the development of classic isometric titles and discussed his plans for the future in a recent interview.

Head of Larian Studios, Swen Vincke, talked about the development of classic isometric RPGs in a recent interview with GRY-OnLine. The game director of Baldur's Gate 3 was asked why, in his opinion, so few other studios develop such games. Vincke briefly replied, "I don't know," but then expanded on the question. 
"Honestly, I don't understand it. Because we proved with Original Sin that the demand for it is huge. It's up to other studies to decide what they think about it. I know why we do it. We enjoy it, we have a lot of fun with it. Apparently, we're able to finance our development because we're selling enough copies, so... as long as this cycle is running, we're happy, said the designer. "Personally, I wish more people would make games like this because I could play them. Meanwhile, there are not many games like ours, and I wish there were."

Vincke added that the target audience for Baldur's Gate 3 is regular RPG fans, not specifically fans of the series or some other similar games like Divinity: Original Sin.

Vincke says Baldur's Gate 3 is a very ambitious game in which players will have unprecedented choices that impact the story's development. The head of Larian thinks they give players their own "Game of Thrones" that they will write themselves.

After the release of Baldur's Gate 3, the designer said he will definitely take a vacation to rest and recharge – this will allow him to restore his creative potential after six years of working on one massive project. Vincke says they have a lot of plans but they won't share anything in the coming months. 

"I can say we have many plans. But in reality, we have to see how it all plays out, and that will define what these plans will be. There are many for now... after 6 years you have many plans," said Vincke. "But we need to find out how it will work. We take a break, we do our post mortem, we look at what went wrong, what went right, what we can do better and differently in the future, we do a review of different ideas, things like that. We certainly won't come up with something new in the next few months, that's for sure."
