"Video game writing is often underestimated."
Baldur's Gate 3’s developers have been busy ever since the start of the project: creating a variety of puzzles, combats, and all those deeply hidden details that surprise players, working out amazing characters and environments with well-polished cinematic effects, writing memorable stories and side content that get players swept away, and all these lead them busy with winning awards after the game was launched.
The roster of the game’s awards is getting a new member, as the game just won a new award during the recent weekend, the Hugo Award for Best Game or Interactive Work.
The World Science Fiction Convention (WSFC) announced the winners on Sunday. Nominees for this award also include Alan Wake 2, Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, Star Wars Jedi Survivor, Dredge, and Chants of Sennaar. Larian's CEO Swen Vincke, along with several writers, took to the stage to receive the trophy and give a speech:
“I’m very grateful that you created this award and this category. Video game writing is often underestimated. It is very, very, very hard work. For Baldur’s Gate 3, we had to create over 174 hours of cinematics just to be able to respect the choices of the players and to make sure that each and every single one of them would have an emotional story that was reflecting their choices and agency.” (Thanks, Polygon)
Hugo Award Ceremony
The Hugo Award for Best Game or Interactive Work is one of the Hugo Awards given annually for sci-fi or fantasy works. Notably, Baldur’s Gate 3 was the second game in history to win this newly created category. The first winner was Hades, which was rewarded in 2021. Back in 2006, the Best Interactive Video Game was created as a one-off game category, but it didn’t have a winner due to a lack of nominations.
