The company plans to use it alongside Unity and Unreal Engine 5.
Bandai Namco Entertainment, a Japanese video game publisher, has revealed that it has been working on its own game engine for at least three years. During an interview with Automation Media, Bandai Namco's Katsusuke Horiuchi has confirmed that the company is developing a new engine to limit the reliance on third-party technology like Unity and Unreal Engine. The company, however, will continue to use them, but only alongside its own engine and only when it is completely necessary.
The development of Bandai Namco's in-house engine is being led by Julien Merceron, who has previously worked on Konami’s Fox Engine as well as various other game engines. The development team consists of 50 people. The interview also mentions that there are no titles currently in development for the company's upcoming engine.
"The reason for in-house production is that we want to continue to have the technological capabilities to create a solid foundation by ourselves, rather than leaving the base to game engines made by other companies," said Katsusuke Horiuchi.
