Blending Hand-Drawn Effects With 3D Animation in Unreal Engine

The Redhill Games team showcased its skills with a great Spider-Verse-style animation.

Redhill Games, a co-development studio specializing in 3D art, has recently showcased the artistic skills of its members by unveiling Michelle, an impressive portfolio piece that combines 2D-like hand-drawn effects with 3D rendering into one remarkable animation.

Inspired by the art styles of Spider-Verse and League of Legends cinematics, the sequence highlights the artists' proficiency in character design, technical art, animation, and VFX – passions that Redhill describes as "the driving force behind this project." Most of the production tasks were accomplished using Unreal Engine 5, while Blender was employed to paint Vertex color data for weighted outlines.

Following the animation's reveal, Game Developer and Technical Artist Pedro Borges, who just recently showcased the shader setup he prepared for Michelle, took to Twitter to provide more information about how the painterly visual style was achieved in UE5 with the help of cel-shading, hatching lines, weighted outlines, painted and procedural stylized normals, and motion smearing:

The 80 Level team has already contacted Redhill regarding the project, so you can expect a more detailed breakdown to come out soon. In the meantime, we highly recommend visiting the studio's website to learn more about Michelle and check out the team's earlier works.
