In his new role, Metzen will be primarily focused on supporting the World of Warcraft leadership in crafting the next generation of adventures. In their official announcement, Blizzard expressed their enthusiasm for the designer's return, acknowledging that Metzen played a pivotal role in establishing the foundations of the Warcraft universe.
Moreover, the company has shared a small teaser, revealing that Metzen and his team will provide more information about their ongoing projects and future plans during the upcoming BlizzCon 2023 event, scheduled to take place on November 3-4, 2023, in Anaheim, California, USA.
Executive Creative Director himself also commented on the matter, saying that working on Warcraft after seven years of retirement felt like coming home:
For those unaware, Chris Metzen previously worked on three major Blizzard franchises: Warcraft, Diablo, and StarCraft. He left Blizzard in 2016 as, according to him, it was "time to slow down." Two years after Metzen's departure from Blizzard, he founded his own company, Warchief Gaming, which produces board games. In 2022, Metzen returned to Blizzard, joining the Warcraft Leadership Team as a Creative Advisor.
