A new job listing from the Call of Duty developer Treyarch has infuriated fans. The studio is looking for a 2D artist/animator experienced in using generative AI – all while workers from every field push back against the onslaught of the tech threatening to steal their jobs and intellectual property.
The artist Treyarch needs will "polish 2D art made by humans and generative AI tools" and should have "advanced expertise" in working with popular AI tools, like Stable Diffusion and DALL-E.
You can imagine the reactions it caused on the internet.
"Treyarch making it abundantly clear they have zero concerns about ethics, liability, or copyright with generative AI," said film concept artist and illustrator Reid Southen.
Some players, however, welcomed the news, arguing that AI is the future companies choose to save time and we should all get used to it.
It's unclear which game the artists are needed for, but chances are it's the next Call of Duty, reportedly called Black Ops Gulf War, expected to be released this year. It will allegedly move to traditional military technology and Black Ops gadgets and feature maps from the Black Ops games, including Grind and WMD. Black Ops 6 will "attempt to explore a nuanced narrative of the Gulf War, with a critical focus on different participants within the conflict. It will dovetail into the end of the Cold War era, and explore some of the consequences therein."
Meanwhile, a recent survey revealed that 26% of illustrators and 36% of translators had lost their jobs to machines. 1,000 games on Steam use generative AI in some way, at studios both small and big, and it seems like Treyarch will join them soon.
