Check Out This Beautiful Animation With Blender's Painterly Effect

3D Artist Alan Wyatt has shared a behind-the-scenes look at Alexander Tullo's A Home for Swallows animation test featuring Alan Wyatt's Blender's NPR procedural filters made with Geometry & Shader Nodes.

Blender Artist Alan Wyatt, known for developing multiple useful tools for achieving the traditional style and mixed media look for 3D art, has offered a behind-the-scenes look at one of A Home for Swallows animation tests made by Alexander Tullo.

A Home for Swallows is an upcoming animated short film about the relationship between two lovers, Claire and Maurice, who've become distanced by their own passions and needs. As they set off on a trip across the French countryside, their relationship is pushed to the edge through the lens of Maurice's paintings, and "life together falls apart as the line between what is real and what is art becomes blurred".

For this animation test and the film, Alan Wyatt worked on the painterly effect for the pipeline, enhancing the visual style with procedural filters and developing an exclusive rendering workflow based on his Blender Live Paint Filter tool. If you want to understand the basics of how it works, you can check out this video by the artist himself:

According to Alan Wyatt, character modeling and animation were done in Maya. Have a look at some more animation tests below:

Another, perhaps much easier solution, is to do post in Photoshop's filters.  It gives you many choices of painterly effects, and is great for creating painterly effects for still or animations.
