"It's just pressing three different buttons by pushing only one."
These days, the value of basic scripting for digital artists is undeniable. Plenty of major DCC software support Python, a language that doesn't require extensive programming knowledge and can save valuable time by automating some processes you may face in production.
Houdini Artist Lara Belaeva showcased an impressive custom version of ZBrush's DynaMesh tool, used to rough out your base mesh before sculpting in a way that lets you focus on form without the limitations of topology. According to Lara, while she had some experience with JavaScript in the past, this is her first time trying Python scripting in Houdini.
Lara also shared a YouTube tutorial that she found extremely useful because it covers a lot of the process and offers a handy tool for setting materials in Solaris using a folder with textures.
"I was sort of afraid of this field thinking that if I widened the sphere of my interests a bit more, my brain would just tear apart. But anyway, it was nice to try. Python is cool. I have some experience with scripting in JS, and compared to that, Python feels more comfortable. While for most Houdini tasks I need, I think HDAs alone would be quite enough", commented Lara.
