A couple of weeks ago, Game Developer and Illustrator Teo Chhim showcased an awesome 2D underwater level created for his upcoming Game Boy-inspired open-world murder mystery game, Detective Fantasia: EXCALIMURDER, promising to provide more details regarding the production process behind it.
Delivering on said promise, the developer has recently shared a comprehensive breakdown detailing the steps he took to bring the surface and the depths of the demonstrated pixel art ocean to life using the GameMaker engine. With this guide, Teo showed how the parallax-style effect was achieved, how the waves and the underwater part of the ocean were set up, how the ocean floor and the rays of light were made, and more. As for the game itself, Detective Fantasia: EXCALIMURDER puts you in the shoes of Fantasia, a young man who was sent to report on the crime scene and collect clues to solve a strange murder. Throughout the game, you'll explore an orphanage, encounter eccentric characters, and solve logic puzzles while navigating a sizeable retro-style open world where you'll collect evidence and identify inconsistencies to crack the case.
