Discord Plans to Focus on Gamers Once Again

A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.

Messaging platform Discord has shared a new blog post outlining its plans for the near future and sharing some exciting news for those who continue using Discord primarily for gaming and may not have been all too happy about the platform's attempts to branch out over the past few years.

The public message shared by Discord's Founder and CEO Jason Citron emphasized the platform's intention to return to its roots, give more love to gamers, who, according to Citron, still constitute 90% of Discord's user base, and "narrow [its] focus from broadly being a community-centric chat app to being a place that helps people deepen their friendships around games and shared interests."

In order to achieve that, the company plans to redesign the app, enhance its voice, video, and streaming technologies, make reaching conversations faster and easier, and expand Discord's features across a wider range of devices.

"After taking stock of the world now that the pandemic is largely behind us, and learning directly from you about how Discord can be even more useful, we've recognized the need to narrow our focus from broadly being a community-centric chat app to being a place that helps people deepen their friendships around games and shared interests," reads the announcement. "We believe Discord can play a uniquely important role in the future of gaming. We're going to focus on making it easier and more fun for people to talk and hang out before, during, and after playing – and we'll help developers of those games bring their creativity to life."

This update offers a refreshing shift in the narrative surrounding Discord, which has lately been making headlines only when there was some controversy involved.

Just recently, it was revealed that a scraping service had compiled over 3 billion messages from 600 million Discord users to sell this information for as little as $5 in crypto. And prior to this, the platform faced considerable backlash for introducing sponsored ads tailored to users' geographic location, age, and gaming activity, despite having previously opposed such practices.
