Ed Boon: Mortal Kombat 1 Will Serve as a "Beginning of a Universe", Not a Continuation of MK11 Story

The series co-creator explained that Mortal Kombat 1 will not continue the story from Mortal Kombat 11. According to him, the new installment signifies the start of a new universe, in which well-known characters will adopt completely different roles within the Mortal Kombat world.

A few days ago, NetherRealm officially announced its next game – Mortal Kombat 1, a new installment in the franchise that serves as a "reborn of the Mortal Kombat Universe". During a recent Kommunity Chat with Tyler and Ed stream, Ed Boon, co-creator of the Mortal Kombat series, shared insights into the franchise's reboot and provided a glimpse into what players can expect from the game.

Boon clarified that the upcoming game marks a significant departure from its predecessors as in it, familiar characters will undergo a transformative shift, assuming entirely new roles within the Mortal Kombat universe.

"This is really the beginning of a universe, in a sense. It is not a continuation of the Mortal Kombat 11 story. The characters have completely different roles in this new timeline and we really wanted to punctuate that and emphasize it with our title," Boon said.

"So, this is Mortal Kombat1. It is a brand new beginning. You're going to be seeing, like I said, these characters reintroduced in their new roles, new relationships with each other. That's the main catalyst for calling it Mortal Kombat 1."

Prior to Boon's clarification, there was a belief that Mortal Kombat 1 would transport the entire series back in time, building upon the conclusion of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, where Liu Kang gained mastery over the manipulation of time. Some fans still believe that there remains a possibility of some connection with Mortal Kombat 11 and that the developers might have the ability to cleverly conceal any such ties, adding an element of intrigue and surprise to the game.

Mortal Kombat 1 is slated for release on September 19. The game will be available on multiple platforms, including PS5, Xbox Series X, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
