Ex-World of Warcraft Designer Says He Was Fired for Adding Corporate Greed Jokes to the Game

"Looks like another yacht for me!"

Former World of Warcraft game designer and writer Eric Covington claims that he was fired from Blizzard after adding some jokes making fun of "corporate greed" to the game. The lines provided by Covington mention "Looks like another yacht for me", "No profit sharing", and "Time to go back to the office".

"I wrote jokes lampooning generic corporate greed for a Venture Company loot goblin (very in character), but then leadership walked face first into the joke after string lock while my focus was getting the patch done.

Because of their embarrassment, I’m no longer at Blizzard."

Covington was dismissed in March, according to LinkedIn, after 9 years of service. "Up in smoke without question because someone looked at an innocuous joke and saw a reflection," he said on Twitter. "They made sure to hustle and get me out before the end of the month in full knowledge that benefits would expire the next day."

According to Covington, his termination letter states "misconduct and harm to the Company by inserting inappropriate non-game related content into a game, which is also a violation of the Company’s Code of Conduct" as the reason behind the act.
