Exploring Cyberpunk 2077 in VR with Apple Vision Pro

Night City looks stunning, but you might want to stick to other VR options.

I think Cyberpunk 2077 is an experimentation field at this point. With companies like NVIDIA constantly boosting its graphics with path tracing, it might become a whole benchmark one day. If you're fine with it, here is another cool project. 

Reddit user Kengine (Spaceman Spliff on YouTube) traveled through Night City in VR using Apple's Vision Pro headset, and the town looks absolutely gorgeous. This is immersion as it is, and, luckily, the creator provided a breakdown of how it was made possible.

Kengine used ALVR (software that lets you stream VR games from your PC to your headset via Wi-Fi) and transferred the code to the Vision Pro via a developer account. They also set up 2 Tundra Labs SteamVR USB dongles linked to 2 Lighthouses, which needed to be calibrated each time they ran the software using OpenVR Space Calibrator.

"ALVR on the host side has a lot of settings, and it took a few weeks of configuring to get it to work smoothly. For Cyberpunk 2077, I'm using the latest Luke Ross VR mod with AER2.0 using 1/2 rate on an RTX4090. The mod is locked behind $10 on Patreon

For my network, I'm using an Asus ROG Wifi 6 router which is about 5-6 feet away connected directly to my PC as an access point and only connected to the Vision Pro. It is set on channel 149. I further tweaked my network settings in Windows as much as possible."

Kengine noted that they had to tweak their network, in-game settings, SteamVR, and ALVR a lot to get a smooth experience. And here is what you might not want to hear. While it certainly looks amazing, the creator doesn't recommend repeating their feat because it's a ton of work for a result that you can get from other, cheaper and easier, options.

"The developer account is limited and the code has to be rebuilt every few days. It's not ideal at all. The sheer amount of work and configuration is absolutely not for the faint-hearted. For the overall cost of all the gear and the end result, you're much better off sticking to other VR headsets to play games. At least for now. As VR options start to improve and become available for the Vision Pro this should certainly change."

The creator also noted that "there's a reason why Sony is opening up the PSVR2 to PCVR games later this year," and Apple should do the same. 

Speaking of PSVR2, Sony has reportedly stopped its production due to excess unsold units.
