Haru, the developer of VRM4U plug-in, shared an enthralling motion trail effect that copies the character's pose.
This captivating and evoking the iconic Golden Experience Requiem's infinite loop scene from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure animation featuring a VRM avatar model was created by Haru, developer of VRM4U plug-in, runtime VRM loader for Unreal Engine 4 & 5.
Recently, Haru has been exploring Epic Games' Game Animation Sample project, a free animation database with over 500 high-quality AAA character animations, successfully retargeting them to a VRM avatar. However, according to the developer, this echo motion trail effect isn't a part of the sample's functionality but was done using a Component that copies the model's pose, so all of these are simply copies.
While this version of ghosting looks great in the video, it will definitely become heavy in an actual project. Check out Amit Mehar's insightful breakdowns and some YouTube tutorials that would help you to recreate similar effects with the Niagara system:
Also, if you're interested in exploring Game Animation Sample with a VRM character, now IK Rig and IKRetargeter for UEFN mannequins are automatically generated when importing VRM, so you can jump in and play with the animations:
