Alas, it didn't work out.
Imagine if you could play Final Fantasy games inside Final Fantasy. Apparently, this could have happened, but something went wrong.
During an interview at FanFest last week, Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida revealed that the developers had been trying to implement old FF games, namely the ones from Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, into the MMO for over a year, but couldn't as they were running on middleware.
"And with like, the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series coming out, we thought that wouldn't it be cool if we can play that in the Gold Saucer?" he said. "So because it's running on middleware, if you want to implement that into 14, you'd have to build another system that can play back the middleware inside the game. So it's like you're building a system of a game to play a system of a game. It's just this weird configuration."
And wouldn't it be great if they succeeded? Well, if you are capable of such a feat, you could try contacting Square Enix, as it would be happy to find such a "super programmer", as GamesRadar+ reported. Yoshida was joking when he said it, but you never know, it does sound like a great idea.
Meanwhile, FF14 fans are looking forward to the Dawntrail expansion coming in the summer of 2024.
