Get 3ds Max Retopology Tool Wrapit For Free

One of the first tools for retopologizing high-poly models is now free to all users.

Released back in 2009, Wrapit was widely used in 3D workflows for conforming meshes to other meshes, assisting in creating lightweight 3D models for further use in game development or animation: retopologizing high-poly ZBrush models and creating low-poly proxies for situations where those are preferable.

As Wrapit's strength lies in allowing you to use the full set of 3ds Max's Editable Poly tools while working on the surface of a target object, there are some unique features such as:

  • QuadGen, automatically creates quad-based meshes from existing high-poly objects and projects UV coordinates and materials from those meshes onto your new geometry
  • Strip Painting, allows freehand or controlled placement of polygon strips to flesh out topology
  • Branch Painting, quickly retopologizes areas of your target mesh that are essentially cylindrical
  • Extend Edge, automatically extends open edges over the surface of your high-poly target object
  • Relax Over Surface, works just like normal relax, but slides your mesh over the surface of the high-poly target mesh
  • Planar Loops, flattens out edge loops in either X, Y, Z, or the local axis, whilst sticking the surface of the high-poly object

When I first created Wrapit back in 2009 there were limited retopology tools in 3ds Max, but things have come a long way since then, from the introduction of the Poly Draw tools to the retopology modifier and more recently the Conform modifier, all these things have gone on to make retopology and mesh conforming a much easier process.

Wrapit still has functionality to add though, I still use it to this day and know there is a loyal user base, so I've chosen to make it easy for those who wish to keep using it, and, who knows, maybe some new users will pick it up.

I recommend existing users update to the free version as I will no longer be supporting single machine licenses or network licenses. It should simply be a case of installing the free version over any existing versions", commented Matt Clark, Wrapit's developer.

Wrapit 1.6 requires 3ds Max 2009-2024. While the plug-in's functionality has been surpassed by some native tools in 3ds Max, it might be still worth checking out.
