Jason Schreier: Blizzard is Working on a New Starcraft Shooter

It's about time.

Jason Schreier, a well-known journalist and industry insider, has recently joined IGN's Unlocked podcast to discuss his upcoming book, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, revealing to the surprise of many that StarCraft, the legendary game series that hasn't seen a new installment since 2010, is not dead, with Blizzard actively developing a new StarCraft game.

During the interview, embedded above, Schreier elaborated on an excerpt from his book, explaining that at the time of writing, Blizzard was working on a new StarCraft project described by the journalist as a "shooter". This new project, however, is not related to the previously canceled StarCraft: Ghost and StarCraft: Ares, which were stealth and FPS games, respectively.

Moreover, it was revealed in Play Nice that Dan Hay, former Executive Director and Producer for Ubisoft's Far Cry series, including Far Cry 3, 4, 5, 6, Primal, and Blood Dragon, is leading the development of the new StarCraft shooter. Since February 2022, Hay has been serving as Blizzard's Vice President and GM, suggesting that development on the project likely began around that time.

Funnily enough, Phil Spencer recently wore a StarCraft t-shirt during Xbox's Tokyo Game Show presentation to tease the addition of StarCraft 2 and StarCraft: Remastered to PC Game Pass, disappointing many fans who hoped his choice of attire meant something more. Whether the timing of the new StarCraft shooter news alongside Spencer's t-shirt is a mere coincidence or some subtle trolling from Microsoft – who, may I remind you, owns Blizzard Entertainment – is currently up to debate.

In his book, Schreier also explained how Bobby Kotick took over the company and provided some details on how Blizzard started losing its independence to Activision through internal conflicts between Bobby Kotick and Mike Morhaime.
