Microsoft is causing discontent among its employees by removing the free Xbox Game Pass Ultimate benefit for the majority of its 238,000 employees. Sources familiar with the matter shared with The Verge that this week, Microsoft started informing staff that starting January 2024, permanent employees outside of Xbox/Microsoft Gaming will no longer have access to the benefit.
While Xbox employees will still keep the benefit, the rest of the Microsoft workforce will see it disappear next year. However, employees will have the option to purchase a discounted 12-month Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Subscription through the company's internal store.

Unhappy with the removal of the benefit, some Microsoft employees have expressed their objections on the company's internal messaging platform. Their posts even caught the attention of Phil Spencer, who responded by stating that he was unaware of the changes and is investigating the situation.
This change in employee benefits comes several months after Xbox Game Pass experienced its first price increase. Microsoft raised the monthly cost of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate from $14.99 to $16.99 and also implemented price hikes for the Xbox Series X console in most markets outside of the US. Additionally, Microsoft introduced Xbox Game Pass Core in September, which replaced Xbox Live Gold and hit 25 million subscribers.
