The Nintendo Switch has outsold the Wii which was the leader among home consoles in the country for ten years.
The Nintendo Switch has become the best-selling home console ever in France, surpassing the Nintendo Wii in lifetime sales.
As reported by the French outlet LeFigaro, the Switch sold 987,000 units in France in 2022 bringing the console's lifetime sales to 7.09 million units. Prior to that, for about a decade, the leader among home consoles was the Wii with 6.3 million units sold. The third place was taken by the PlayStation 4 which has shipped 6 million units.
Nintendo France General Manager Philippe Lavoué shared that in 2022, nearly one out of every two consoles sold in France was a Switch. Additionally, Nintendo stated that nearly 25% of French households own one or more Switch consoles, with new buyers being made up of half families with children and half young adults.
As for the handheld consoles, the leader here is the Nintendo DS, whose sales surpass 10 million units.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet was the top-selling Switch game in France in 2022 with 701,000 units sold, followed by Pokémon Legends Arceus, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Nintendo Switch Sports.
Lavoué also noted that thanks to Pokémon Legends: Arceus and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Pokémon had "a historic year" that was "unheard of for a franchise in France."
