An artist shared that 6 years ago, he was part of a pitch that wished to reimagine Dark Souls 3 as 2D pixel art Metroidvania.
Pixel artist Thomas Feichtmeir recently took to Twitter to share that he once was working on a project that was supposed to reimagine Dark Souls 3 as 2D pixel art Metroidvania.
Feichtmeir shared that he was part of the team that pitched the project to Bandai Namco about six years ago but noted that only now he finally could tell anybody about it as an NDA he signed over the project now expired. In addition to sharing the news about the pixel art version of Dark Souls 3, the artist also published an image created for the project.
In an interview with Kotaku, the artist explained that the art he posted was made around 2016, the time when "everyone wanted to have a cool 2D, Souls-like Metroidvania." He explained that at the time, this genre was new to the public and somebody just "had to try a pitch to Bandai Namco."
Blasphemous
While the project never got to see the light of day, it apparently became the source of inspiration for another Metroidvania – 2019's video game Blasphemous.
Feichtmeir shared that a number of people in comments to his tweet noticed that the image he posted reminded them of Blasphemous, which, according to him, "makes a lot of sense" as a few years after he and the team pitched the project to Bandai Namco, he indeed worked as an artist on Blasphemous.
