Respawn's senior producer Blair Brown and design director Jeff Magers discussed how the team managed to finish the production of the game in record time.
Due to increased production costs and inflated expectations for the size of games, as well as the ongoing global pandemic affecting the production of game titles, games are now taking longer to complete than they did in the past. Despite this, Respawn was able to develop Star Wars Jedi: Survivor in just three years.
In a recent interview with PC Gamer, the studio's senior producer Blair Brown explained how developers managed to finish the project in record time.
According to him, there were various reasons why Survivor was developed so quickly. However, he thinks that one of the most crucial factors was that the core team behind Fallen Order was able to stay together and create what he considers to be a "true sequel."
"With Fallen Order, we had to build the team as we're making the game as well. This time we had the team ready," said Brown. "We knew the touchstones of the last game. We had a very good sense from player feedback and our own feedback what we wanted to make better, what we wanted to go deeper on, the missed opportunities – customization, more [lightsaber] stances, more side exploration, things like that."
Brown believes that the fact that there were no significant changes in technology or team composition was also helpful. He personally finds it impressive as a developer that the game was able to be of such a large size, scope, depth, and quality, all within a three-year development period.
Jeff Magers, the design director, told PC Gamer he was equally amazed that his team had been able to unite and deliver during the most challenging years of the pandemic.
"I don't know how we did it," Magers said. "But I am super proud of the team. I think it does come down to having a strong vision at the start and a really incredible team."
