Retro-Style Murder Mystery Game with PS1 Graphics

"It's kinda like if SquareSoft made a Law & Order game in 1999."

Solo game developer Sunamii shared a teaser of their upcoming murder mystery game with PlayStation 1 graphics, and it looks intriguing.

"The harmonious urban rhythm of a bustling metro is disrupted by the gruesome murder of a young woman. Bewildered and on edge, law enforcement swiftly unravels a bone-chilling revelation: this horrifying act is just the beginning. Soon, a sinister pattern materializes, signaling the presence of a cunning serial killer who stalks the city's shadows, sowing terror at every turn."

In this retro-style indie, called Cold and Afraid, you play as a detective trying to find a killer, looking for clues around the college town and interrogating possible witnesses. "It's kinda like if SquareSoft made a Law & Order game in 1999," Sunamii describes the game.

For reference, SquareSoft, also known as Square, started the Final Fantasy series and later merged with Enix to create that one well-known company. Law & Order is a drama about the criminal justice system, so combining these two inspirations sounds promising.

With this project, Sunamii wants to make the "greatest PS1-style video game", "much more than just your typical indie game."

"In a genre where visuals are given priority over substance, Cold and Afraid places consequential dialogue choices, and the relationships you develop with characters at the heart of the experience," said the creator on their website.

To make the action more realistic, Sunamii added a time event system, which means no one will be waiting for you, so you'll have to plan your day carefully to catch people for a chat.

Cold and Afraid is still in development, and if you want to see it done, consider supporting the creator.
