After over a decade of development, Squadron 42, the multiplayer space trading and combat simulation game, has received a new development update from Cloud Imperium Games, well-known for previously successfully launched Star Citizen. Today the developer behind the long-awaited game has shared that the Squadron 42 is now feature-complete and the creators can shift to the polishing phase.

"We are excited to announce that Squadron 42 is now feature-complete! As we move into the polishing phase, we're fully focused on optimizing and fine-tuning all aspects of the gameplay experience to deliver an unprecedented cinematic adventure. To celebrate this milestone, we have gathered our core development leadership from around the globe to share what this means," Cloud Imperium stated.

Cloud Imperium's announcement of Squadron 42's feature completion is accompanied by an almost 27-minute video featuring Chris Roberts and other developers showcasing various aspects of the game. The video shows expected elements such as space combat, cutscenes with renowned actors, and a glimpse of the on-foot sections. Richard Tyrer, the Senior Game Director, highlights the improvements made to tactical FPS combat, stealth mechanics, looting, weapon feel and balance, scopes, locomotion, and the introduction of the Maelstrom-powered destructible environment. Tyrer emphasizes that this phase marks the final gameplay iteration before focusing on optimization and stability. However, the exact duration of the polishing phase remains undisclosed. Roberts concludes the video by assuring viewers that the release date will be revealed as soon as it is finalized, as the team is determined to fulfill their promise of delivering a game on par with the iconic Wing Commander series.

"When we have the locked release date, you will be the first to know. We have come this far, and we want to make sure that Squadron 42 delivers on the promise of being this generation's Wing Commander," Roberts stated at the end of the video.

The last update we received from the developer was back in 2022 when Cloud Imperium informed fans that its AI Content team was working on a realistic bedsheet deformation system for Squadron 42, while everyone was waiting for the launch of the game.
