Square Enix To Continue Focusing on Blockchain Games in 2023

The publisher reaffirmed its plans to focus on blockchain games and shared that it will reveal more such projects in 2023.

Square Enix, the creator of the popular video game franchises Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, reaffirmed its plans to focus on developing blockchain games despite the volatility in the crypto market.

While a number of game companies have a strong negative stance on the potential for NFTs in gaming and the NFT market remains down, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda shared that the company will continue its major focus on blockchain.

In his annual new year's letter, Matsuda noted that blockchain is included in Square Enix's medium-term business plan and that the company still believes that the development of this industry is important for it, despite the "volatility" in the cryptocurrency and NFT markets.

According to Matsuda, soon these markets will be regulated much more strictly, which will only benefit and help those who are really interested in the technology and are not primarily pursuing monetization.

"Following the excitement and exhilaration that surrounded NFTs and the metaverse in 2021, 2022 was a year of great volatility in the blockchain-related space," he wrote. "However, if this proves to have been a step in a process that leads to the creation of rules and a more transparent business environment, it will definitely have been for the good of the growth of blockchain entertainment."

Square Enix is currently working on several blockchain games at once, some of which (like an Ethereum NFT-driven web-based game Symbiogenesis) have already been announced. According to Matsuda's letter, the publisher will also reveal some more blockchain projects in 2023.
