The 30 FPS vs. 60 FPS Debate Rages On on Twitter

Can you see the difference between the two?

Ever since the dawn of time, or at least since the late 90s, framerate in video games has been one of the most divisive topics of the gaming industry, alongside debates on whether game addiction is a thing or if games like GTA really do encourage violence (they don't). To this day, it is paramount for many gamers that the title they play supports 60+ FPS, often criticizing games even before their release if developers announce they won't surpass 30 FPS.

Recently, a Twitter user and a self-described Deity Of Gaming Debates known as NintenGOD addressed the issue with a lengthy thread, offering a contentious perspective on the subject matter. Using gameplay videos from PlatinumGames's 2019 hack-and-slash game Astral Chain to bolster their argument, NintenGOD labeled the "30 FPS is 'unplayable' narrative" as one of gaming's worst trends, saying that excellent games will remain excellent and poor games will remain poor regardless of framerate.

At the same time, the user argued that most people wouldn't notice the difference between 30 FPS and 60 FPS, suggesting that the FPS debate is merely a tool utilized by "PC clowns" to feel superior, whom NintenGOD derided as "simpletons" and to whom they advised to acknowledge their place in the gaming hierarchy, which, according to the user, "revolves around console gamers".

Given a blend of ad hominem attacks and typical Twitter antics in NintenGOD's argument, it's unsurprising that the user's viewpoint faced significant pushback in the comments and even garnered a Community Note from Twitter itself.

While many agreed with NintenGOD's core point that the quality of games isn't solely determined by FPS, their assertion that there's no discernible difference between 30 and 60 FPS stirred controversy. Numerous commenters criticized NintenGOD, arguing that the contrast is indeed noticeable and highlighting that once you experience the smoothness of 60+ FPS, it's simply difficult to downgrade.

Additionally, adhering to the principle of "do unto others as you would have them do unto you", the commenters resorted to ad hominem jabs of their own, calling it ironic for a Nintendo player to engage in a debate about framerate.

In under a week, NintenGOD's Twitter thread amassed over 4 million views and received more than 2 thousand comments, highlighting the community's keen interest in the 30 FPS vs. 60 FPS debate. Even 60 is noticeable when you play too much First Person Shooter games which mostly give 100+ Frame Per Second. The main tweet is absurd!
