Kyrylo Voievodin used nodes and VEX code to set up the generator.
Technical Artist Kyrylo Voievodin has recently showcased the power of Houdini, SideFX's procedural 3D software and the artist's go-to tool, presenting a jaw-dropping procedural generator that can turn PNG images into customizable 3D mosaics.
According to the creator, the generator was made entirely in Houdini without any third-party applications using nodes and "VEX code in a few places". Additionally, Kyrylo employed PolyExpand 2D to create the orange sections showcased in the demo above.
"The result is a dynamic mosaic capable of seamlessly integrating different patterns or logos, automatically rearranging itself to fit the new design," comments the author "This innovation enhances creative freedom and streamlines the design process, enabling the creation of unique and complex mosaic patterns with just a few parameters."
The artist also pointed out that the setup was inspired by Svetlana LaCroix's tutorial on creating procedural brick pavement in Houdini for Unreal Engine 5:
