Todd Howard Says the Elder Scrolls 6 Could Be His Last One

In a statement, Todd Howard shared that The Elder Scrolls 6 could be his last project within the company.

During a conversation with journalists, Howard shed light on Bethesda's future plans, saying that The Elder Scrolls 6 will be the next major title after Starfield. However, at the same time, Howard made a bold statement saying that after the release of The Elder Scrolls 6, he might be taking a step back from his long-held leadership role within the company.

He did not delve into the details of the game's production, but discussed how the process has changed over time. Now the development teams are required to support each release for months, often years, as opposed to producing a game, releasing it, and moving on to the sequel.

Even though the first teaser for The Elder Scrolls 6 debuted at E3 2018, the Elder Scrolls sequel's official release date hasn't been disclosed. Based on Bethesda’s track record for development timescales, The Elder Scrolls 6 may even skip the current generation of consoles entirely. Given the project’s lengthy process, Howard believes that this sequel can be the final one for him.

“And then as we look to an Elder Scrolls 6, that is one where... I probably shouldn't say this. But if I do the math, I'm not getting any younger. How long do people play Elder Scrolls for? That may be the last one I do. I don't know”, said Howard.

Considering the extensive post-release support and the enduring popularity of Elder Scrolls games, it is hoped that Howard will remain with the company for the foreseeable future. However, only time will reveal if this truly marks his final project as the company's director.
