Wood Carving in VR Breakdown

VR Engineer Daniel Beauchamp showed how he made the mechanic in Unity.

VR Engineer Daniel Beauchamp explained how he made the wood carving mechanic in VR.

The artist said it was made with Unity Jobs and the burst compiler. Each frame was looped over the vertices of the mesh, which were moved down if they were above the knife.

The shavings are built procedurally.

Following the knife movement, Beauchamp would find the vertices that's been "cut" closest to the top and the bottom of the blade and add them to the shaving's mesh.

The artist would then rotate the vertices of the shavings with the knife movement.

If a vertex had been cut, he would store a special value in its vertex color property to texture those vertices differently from the untouched bark vertices.

Beauchamp assures that the method works with different shapes and cuts.
