A Gamer Declines a Lifetime Xbox Game Pass Due to Taxes

The prize wouldn't have benefited its receiver until "almost 10 years have passed".

Without a doubt, for many Xbox fans receiving a "lifetime" Xbox Game Pass, a pass that provides one with 40 years of free access to Xbox subscription service, would be a dream come true. But while getting unlimited access to Xbox's library of games and other services without paying a dime may sound good at first, a recent Reddit post shared on the r/MicrosoftRewards board showed that the prize may only bring financial losses, depending on your country's approach to taxation.

The post in question was published by Reddit user Elvite, who claimed to had received a lifetime Xbox Game Pass Ultimate but ultimately declined it due to the US' tax laws. In the post, Elvite explained that if they had claimed the prize, it would have increased their taxable income for 2023 by $7,300. Consequently, they would have had to pay an additional $1,752 on their federal tax bill, in addition to state income tax. As noted by the OP, the prize in question would not really be beneficial "until almost 10 years have passed".

What do you think about the situation? Would you have accepted the prize knowing its tax-related consequences? Tell us in the comments.

The 10 year break even  is assuming the game pass price doesn't increase. If it goes up to 20 or 25 per month then the break-even is shorter.

Imagine thinking it's good idea offering lifetime service for Xbox brand as if it will necessarily be around in 10, 20, 40 years.  No promises, in the volatile world of technology.

I would adjust my withheld tax for a year to even out the tax bill. Consider it the gamepass bill for that year. Then he's good!
