A24 Is Under Fire Because of AI-Generated Posters for Civil War

Repeat after me: generative AI is not good for your karma.

The movie company A24 is known for distributing the 2022 hit Everything Everywhere All at Once, and now it has a chance to spread its fame some more, just not in the way it would appreciate. The studio found itself in viewers' disfavor after publishing a bunch of seemingly AI-generated posters for its latest movie Civil War.

Social media users quickly pointed out some mistakes in the pictures and the uncanny valley effect they cause. For example, you can see a car with three doors in one of the images and the most AI-made swan you've ever seen in another (and if it's somehow created by a person... I hope not even if it's a paddleboat.)

"Using AI for advertising might be a sign, maybe it's the beginning of the end for a company that used to rely on indie aesthetics. It's incredibly disappointing," said one Instagram user. Another was surprised to see AI in the marketing campaign of a movie about photojournalism.

I don't know if we'll see a non-apology or a third-party excuse, or perhaps A24 will quietly delete the images tomorrow, but the rule of thumb nowadays is not to use AI-generated images for big-budget productions.

Speaking of budgets, if you thought this was all the drama related to the posters, you're wrong. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, people also say these scenes simply don't exist in the movie and make the whole campaign look like false advertising.

“None of this happens in the movie,” wrote one viewer (via The Hollywood Reporter). “I don’t understand this campaign. U are selling a movie that doesn’t exist and it’s very bizarre. I love a24 with all my heart but I am so bloody confused about what happened with this film.”
