Activision will reportedly postpone the release of the new Call of Duty mainline game and launch a new free-to-play title.
Treyarch’s next Call of Duty mainline title won't reportedly come out in 2023, for the first time in the eighteen-year history of the series, skipping its annual release.
Originally planned for the next year, the new Call of Duty game will be delayed until 2024, as reported by Bloomberg. The decision to postpone the launch was made after Vanguard sales did not meet the company’s expectations. The report also notes that the delay is unrelated to Microsoft's $69bn acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
Instead of a major release in 2023, Activision plans to release a sequel to its free-to-play Call of Duty: Warzone and announced the 2022 release of Infinity Modern Warfare 2. According to the Bloomberg report, a "new free-to-play online title" that Treyarch is helping develop is expected to launch next year. Apparently, it's going to be a separate title that doesn't refer to Warzone 2 since its release should take place in the fall of 2022.
The absence of another major Call of Duty in 2023 will certainly affect the release schedule in general. In the absence of the AAA shooter, which is the leader of the sales charts almost every year, some other titles will take its place in the fall.
