Alliance For OpenUSD Launched OpenUSD 25.02

This release improves material interoperability through OpenPBR via MaterialX, adds a new Color Space API for managing color spaces, and optimizes sublayer change processing for better performance.

Pixar

Alliance for OpenUSD, an open organization founded by Pixar, Adobe, Apple, Autodesk, and NVIDIA to advance OpenUSD and help standardize the 3D ecosystem, has just shipped the latest version of OpenUSD, broadening its focus on content interoperability in materials and color through the OpenPBR and Color Interop Forum initiatives. It also continues to make progress across several key development areas, including validation and animation splines.

OpenUSD supports the OpenPBR shading model for enhanced material interoperability with OpenUSD 25.02 compatible with MaterialX 1.39 or 1.38.10-OpenPBR. While version 25.02 defaults to MaterialX 1.38.10, developers can opt for newer versions to use OpenPBR in their content.

Developers can now manage color space in OpenUSD content using a declarative approach. Color Management in OpenUSD ensures consistent handling of color across devices and workflows, with Color Transformation enabling color conversion between spaces. The new UsdColorSpaceAPI introduces a colorSpace property for defining color space at both the prim and attribute levels, supporting inheritance within compositional hierarchies. UsdColorSpaceDefinitionAPI allows for custom color spaces, useful for specialized color matching and transformation workflows.

Change processing has been optimized for adding, removing, and muting sublayers, which is essential for organizational and departmental workflows. This allows teams to work on separate sublayers, enabling independent work while still contributing to a unified final scene.
