The author was interested in improving the performance of Steam Deck, so they made it a personal project to explore optimization methods.
Valve's Steam Deck has quickly become the leading PC-based gaming handheld on the market, gaining immense popularity and prominence. In light of this, one enthusiast has taken on the challenge of writing a comprehensive research paper aimed at optimizing the device's performance.
As spotted by Game Rant, the author of the paper, CJ Griesmeyer, who describes themselves as "an early career IT professional", has shared their work on Reddit. According to the author, they decided to undertake the topic as a personal project out of interest with the aim to explore the limitations of low-energy processors and identify ways to optimize their performance.
Within their study, Griesmeyer performed benchmark tests on several demanding games, including Cities: Skylines, Crysis Remastered, and Marvel's Spider-Man: Remastered, using the Steam Deck.
The author has tested the software both with and without modifications and has observed improvements in performance in some cases. Besides, Griesmeyer reached out to experts in the field, such as Cryobyte33, for their insights.
The research also involves exploring how professional-focused software may perform on similar hardware and how software makes use of constricted hardware.
The author now plans to conduct further testing with low-latency video streaming workloads, web server hosting, game server hosting, code compilation, and professional creative software workloads.
