The best apps and games were chosen across a range of categories such as Inclusivity, Delight and Fun, Interaction, Social Impact, Visuals and Graphics, and Innovation.
Apple has announced the winners of the Apple Design Awards 2022, an annual event hosted by the company at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). During every event, Apple recognizes the best and most innovative Mac and iOS software made by independent developers, as well as the best and most creative uses of Apple's products.
The categories of ADAs vary every time. This year's categories included Inclusivity, Delight and Fun, Interaction, Social Impact, Visuals and Graphics, and Innovation.
Inclusivity
The winners in the inclusivity category were Procreate from the Australian developer Savage Interactive and Studio Drydock's game Wylde Flowers.
- Procreate is an app for artists and designers that has special features for people with disabilities like tremor and motion filtering, an in-app assistive touch menu, audio feedback, and color blindness settings.
- Wylde Flowers is a fantasy life simulation game for Apple Arcade. Apple paid special attention to its narrative that represents all ages, cultures, and sexualities including LGBTQIA+ characters.
Delight and Fun
Apps in this category were chosen for providing fun, engaging, and memorable experiences to users. The app (Not Boring) Habits from Andy Works LLC and a detective adventure game from the creator of 80 Days, inkle, were the winners in this category.
- (Not Boring) Habits is a task and habit tracking app designed as a simple rewarding game. According to Apple, this app makes tracking habits a "truly artistic experience" due to its design, interesting haptics, and well-thought gamification.
- Overboard! is a murder mystery game in which the player turns out to be a killer instead of a detective. The game offers multiple endings and engages players with pithy dialogues and a cool narrative design.
Interaction
Apps and games in this category were awarded for an easy intuitive interface that was flawlessly adapted to the platform.
- Slopes is a ski-tracking app created by developer Breakpoint Studio. It is perfect for winter sports fans allowing them to track their location, distance, and speed. It also includes great social features to interact with friends.
- A Musical Story is an interactive adventure with a focus on music and gameplay with rhythm game mechanics. The game was made by the French developer Glee-Cheese Studio.
Social Impact
Apple stated that winners in the social impact category "improve lives in a meaningful way".
- Rebel Girls is is an app from Rebel Girls Inc. that collects the stories of powerful women such as Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Simone Biles, and Frida Kahlo. The stories are accompanied by rich audio and original art.
- Gibbon: Beyond the Trees is a game for Apple Arcade created by the developer Broken Rules. It's an ecological adventure that features an "environmentally-conscious" storyline and interesting unique mechanics.
Visuals and Graphics
The winners of this category became Lux Optics's app Halide Mark II and Gameloft's LEGO Star Wars: Castaways.
- Halide Mark II is a camera app that features an easy-to-use interface that mimics a film camera.
- LEGO Star Wars: Castaways is a space arcade game set in the Star Wars universe. Featuring great visual effects and smooth animations, the game provides a cool cinematic feel.
Innovation
Games and apps in this category provide a cutting-edge experience through the most creative uses of Apple's technologies. The winners of the innovation category were Volst's Odio and Netmarble Corp.'s MARVEL Future Revolution.
- Odio is an ambient music production app that features Spatial Audio and head tracking.
- MARVEL Future Revolution is a multiplayer action RPG with Marvel characters. The game was also awarded the iPad Game of the Year prize in 2021.
