Arcane Showrunners on Season 2 and the Future of the Series

Riot's Christian Linke and Alex Yee conducted an AMA session to celebrate Arcane's birthday.

To celebrate the first anniversary of Arcane, a renowned League of Legends-based TV series created by Riot Games and Fortiche Productions, the show's co-creators Christian Linke and Alex Yee recently conducted an AMA session on Reddit, answering questions related to the past and future of Arcane, sharing some behind-the-scenes info regarding the show's second season, and discussing their approach to writing a script, establishing characters and more.

Here are some of the most interesting insights shared by the showrunners:

  • In the beginning, the team had no idea how to craft a TV series and was looking for a "secret sauce that unlocks a TV story structure", which turned out to be non-existent. This revelation helped the team to refine their vision and set up "their own metrics and processes to track plot and character", enabling them to write the script we know and love.
  • The finale of the third episode was the hardest storytelling-wise.
  • The creators described the upcoming season 2 of the show with the words "War" and "Rubicon".
  • Season 2 will feature flashbacks of young Silco and Vander.
  • There is an Arcane artbook in the works, the release date is unknown.
  • The team's approach to criticism of Season 1 is to learn and adapt instead of crying over the missed opportunities.
  • Mel Medarda's return is "solidly possible".
  • Riot Games' support of the show allows the creators to have the time and resources they need to achieve the desired quality. At the same time, it slows down the production process rather than accelerates it.
  • The team wants to explore other regions without cramming in "too many different perspectives too quickly".
  • After Silco's death, someone stronger will fill the power vacuum in the future, although the team is not sure whether " this will be apparent in season 2".
  • The show's writing was slightly influenced by Peaky Blinders.
  • The show's art style was not influenced by anything in particular. "When we started Arcane, there wasn't really anything out there that had the look and style we had in mind," commented the team.
  • There will be more interactions between Ekko and Jinx in season 2.
  • The team did not expect Silco to become such a fan favorite.
  • Silco and Jinx were the hardest characters to write, while Heimerdinger and Jayce were much easier.
  • There will be Arcane-related merch.
  • The show still contains heaps of unfound easter eggs.
  • Q: What should we expect for Viktor in season 2? A: Everything.
  • Q: Are there going to be any sex scenes in S2? A: Maybe.
  • Season 2's release date has not been revealed.
