Ryan Scavnicky, an Architecture Critic, talked about the architecture of Control.
Ryan Scavnicky, an Architecture Critic, discussed the architecture in the 2019 game Control. In the 15-minute discussion, posted on Extra Office YouTube channel he shared his take on the topic of architecture in the game. According to many, the environments of the Oldest House (the main location of the game) are designed in Brutalist Architecture, however, the author of the video disagrees with that.
Despite many features of the environment that would scream "Brutalism", Ryan discussed it from the position of Defamiliarization. Defamiliarization is the artistic technique of presenting to audiences common things in an unfamiliar or strange way so they could gain new perspectives and see the world differently. From the perspective of such an approach, Ryan discusses different parts of the game's environment, proving his point that the architecture in Control is not all about Brutalism.
