Assassin's Creed Vet Jean Guesdon Is Leaving Ubisoft

Creative director of Assassin's Creed Black Flag and Origins Jean Guesdon announced his departure from the company after 17 years of service.

Jean Guesdon, a seasoned developer who worked on the Assassins' Creed series, has announced that he is leaving Ubisoft after 17 years of service. His leave is the latest high-profile departure from the publisher, which is currently facing "major challenges" and suffering from delays and cancellations.

Guesdon revealed the news on Thursday in a LinkedIn post, thanking Ubisoft Montréal and people whom he met during his time at the company. He, however, didn't share where he is going to head next.

"2023 will start for me with the end of a bit more than 17 formidable years at Ubisoft Montreal," Guesdon wrote. "I can't express how much I owe to this unique company. So many people met, so many skills learned and so many projects shipped. And Assassin's Creed, of course, Assassin's Creed... Thank you Ubi, very very much!!"

Guesdon started his work at Ubisoft as a production coordinator on Assassin’s Creed projects in 2005. He later served as a game designer on Assassin's Creed II, worked as Assassin's Creed head of content contributing to such titles as Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Assassin's Creed Revelations, and Assassin's Creed III as well as was a creative director of Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag and Assassin's Creed Origins.

During his last five years at the company, Guesdon served as a creative director on an undisclosed Ubisoft Montréal game. The title, presumably codenamed Renaissance, is set to release for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S and, according to Kotaku's sources, it is planned to combine Minecraft-like, voxel-based elements with collaborative gameplay. It's unclear how Guesdon's departure will affect the project.

"We thank Jean for his strong creative vision, openness, ideas, and most of all, his ability to put himself ‘in the shoes’ of our players in his contributions to Ubisoft," a Ubisoft spokesperson told Kotaku. "We wish him well as he moves on to his next chapter."
