Originally launched last year, this project developed in collaboration with Autodesk and Adobe as the successor to both Autodesk Standard Surface and Adobe Standard Material intends to provide a new artist-friendly open-source shading model to facilitate interchange from one software package to another.
Interchange of CG assets has long been an industry-wide challenge, with different renderers and 3D engines each using different shading systems, languages, and pipelines. OpenPBR or Open Physically-Based Rendering housed by Academy Software Foundation serves as an open standard capable of accurately modeling most CG materials found in typical professional VFX and animation workflows.
The latest 1.0 release introduces a reference implementation for OpenPBR that is integrated within MaterialX, meaning that tools in the MaterialX and OpenUSD ecosystem will automatically support OpenPBR.

"Collaboration with the MaterialX project has provided a reference implementation for the ecosystem to build their OpenPBR workflow. This aligns with the Alliance for OpenUSD's strategy and highlights the collaboration with the ASWF MaterialX Working Group.
This new approach aims to optimize studio pipelines and personal workflows, freeing artists from restrictive systems and promoting industry-wide adoption. The OpenPBR Surface material is expected to be embraced by various render engines while providing studios and artists the flexibility to choose different tools", commented Adobe Substance 3D Team in the blog post.
Adobe also highly encourages everyone to join the discussion and contribute to the project on GitHub. More 1.0 updates are listed in the release notes here.
